New Yorker fed ChatGPT her past Journal Entries and had a therapeutic chat with her child-self.

Michelle Huang, a New Yorker, artist and scientist, fed ChatGPT her past Journal Entries to create a chatbot embodying her child-self and found the experience therapeutic.

She meticulously selected excerpts from journals she maintained between the ages of 7 and 18. These entries, filled with personal musings, fears, dreams, and day-to-day experiences, served as a rich dataset for her project.

Using OpenAI's GPT-3, Huang input snippets from about 40 of these entries, particularly focusing on her thoughts and experiences from ages 10 to 14. The model's responses were strikingly similar to Huang's perceived thought processes during those years.

In conversations with the AI-powered 'young Michelle,' Huang found herself deeply moved. The AI's responses, embodying her younger self's voice, expressed pride and understanding. It was a powerful moment for Huang, feeling as if she was communicating with her past self in real-time, bridging years through a digital chatbox.

One profound exchange involved Huang reassuring her younger self with affirmations of love, care, and safety – words she yearned for in her youth. This interaction felt akin to extending a comforting embrace across time.

The climax of this experiment was when Huang prompted the AI to write a letter from her past self to her present self. The letter's message of pride and acceptance had a therapeutic effect, helping Huang to confront and alleviate deep-seated feelings of shame and disappointment.

This experience highlighted the therapeutic possibilities of engaging with an AI trained on personal history. It wasn't just an imaginative exercise; it was a tangible interaction with a version of herself, informed by her own journal entries.

Reflecting on this journey, Huang realized the powerful emotional impact of reconnecting with her inner child. This encounter not only affirmed the unchanging aspects of her personality but also unearthed elements she had lost touch with. The entire process rekindled a sense of possibility and optimism in her life. Try Lalaland Pixie, recall information from your journals and introspect with AI.
